Cool Shirt active cooling systems consist of a cooling vest, a cooler, and hose that you connect to the garment. There are different types of garments, which you can read about on our Shirts & Vests page. The cooler is the device that holds the water and ice, and which the water circulates through.

Cold water is sent out to the garment and runs against your chest and back pulling the heat off of your core body and taking it back to the cooler. In the cooler, the water is once again cooled.

When you need to stay cool for more than an hour, you will need an active cooling system. depending on the heat and humidity of the day. Active cooling systems coolers will give you up to six hours of cooling depending on many factors.
Passive cooling equipment will only last from 1/2 hour to 1 hour depending on how hot it is outside. After that they are just wet.

How long do they stay cold?
The cooling system stays coldly as long as the ice stays frozen. This depends on many factors: size of the cooler and how much ice and water it can hold, how long you are going to be exposed to the heat, and the heat of the day.
  1.  Size of the Cooler - We sell coolers that hold ice blocks the size of 1lb of butter to 60 quarts of water.
  2.  How long your are exposed to heat - Obviously if you are fighting a fire or driving a race car, you will not be in control of how long you will be exposed to the heat. If you are trying to put in a full 8 hours of work, you may not always be able to stay out of the heat. In those cases you are going to need the larger coolers, which means a 24 quart to a 60 quart for firefighters.
 3.  How hot of a day - The rule of thumb is that you will need to double the amount of ice you need for every 10 degrees of temperature. If you used 20lbs of ice for temperatures in the 80s in a 24 quart cooler, you would need to have 40lbs a for 90 degree weather assuming you would be exposed to the heat for an entire eight hours. This is just a rough estimate, but it gives you an idea of what you will need. Everyone's interpretation of cool enough is different. Someone that is severely heat intolerant will require more cooling and more ice.
